Foot on the Gas

Through debate, discourse, deliberation, the Iraq War has been turned inside out and upside down by both sides to fully understand it, its mission, and its implications. On one side we have a group of people who have refused to bring freedom to the Iraqis and refuse to recognize the threat Saddam posed with his continued development of weapons of mass destruction. On the other, we have a group of people who can see those enigmatic implications; the advancement of freedom and democracy inflict unique and effective blows to the tyrannical and oppressive element we’ve dubbed terrorism.

With the broader battle on terrorism in full swing, we often look behind us on the road we’ve taken to see our accomplishments and to reaffirm our reasoning. With the killing of Zarqawi, and the some 40 targeted raids that followed are just some of the accomplishments easily seen in the rear-view mirror. But even farther behind us, nearly blending into the seemingly endless horizon is the genesis of this battle. Saddam’s trial reminds us every day that Iraq is under new management, and for a good reason.

New documents provide a strong insight into Saddam’s intent to hide his weapons and mislead the United Nations weapons inspectors, like he did many times through the 90’s till his capture.

The conclusion is crystal clear: we did the right thing at the right time, and it is irresponsible to think otherwise. It is irresponsible to disregard missing WMD-related material. It is irresponsible to ignore the Al-Samoud missiles that were found in Iraq. It is irresponsible to forget about the unaccounted for chemical and biological agents.

With our foot on the gas, we will continue to push ahead on this road we’ve taken. Regardless of how much it takes to fill our tank, we’ll continue.
